Rhythm & Vibe traces that strange, creative, sometimes ridiculous journey from the early digital world into the connected lives we inhabit today. It is a story about technology, certainly—but even more about the people growing up alongside it.
Synopsis
Rhythm & Vibe explores the internet almost as if it were growing up with us.
From dial-up connections and computer labs to glitter GIFs, GeoCities, Napster, AIM, early social networks, smartphones, algorithms, and the increasingly invisible systems surrounding modern life, the book follows the stages through which digital culture gradually became simply culture.
Along the way, it revisits an internet that was often slower, messier, and considerably less polished—but also remarkably participatory. People decorated pages, chose screen names, shared music, wandered through hyperlinks, built communities, and experimented with digital identity before many of us understood what any of it would eventually become.
But nostalgia is only the beginning.
Rhythm & Vibe examines what changed as experimentation became industry, connection became infrastructure, and attention became something that could be measured, optimized, and monetized. The result is neither a celebration of the past nor a rejection of the present. It is an attempt to understand how we got here—and what growing into a more mature relationship with technology might look like.
Because the internet didn't simply grow up around us.
We grew up inside it.
